Process on Final Project

I am almost finished with my final portfolio project. I have finished putting together the website and have completed all of the written work. Now, all I have left to do is go through and edit my website a few more times, correcting and re-wording phrases. Then, I will post my final portfolio link to my blog. I plan on being finished by tonight or tomorrow and I will post my link as soon as I am finished. I have spend many hours on this project and I am happy with my final presentation. I think that being able to publish our work online for the world to see is more exiting then handing in a copy to the professor. I truly enjoyed this project and I had a fun time observing the children and teachers. But, at the same time, I am exited to be finished observing and writing papers :)

Drafting Drafts

I found the reading for Friday April 15th to be extremely helpful for me. I am worried about putting all of my essays together into one project. At first I though, "This will be easy," but now my thoughts have flip flopped. I am terrified, the length scares me and after the examples we have read in class I am not sure my paper will stand out. Then I read the Resisting writing and laughed, because I can related, I do not want to write because it is hard to get started and I usually think of something else that needs to be done. And that is how I am feeling about starting to pull together this essay. Then I moved on to read Drafting Drafts and it gave me tips and idea of how to short through all my notes and random papers of observations and pull everything together for a final paper. As the reading suggested, I might lay out all of my observations on the floor and figure out how to make it flow. For me, getting started and figuring out where to go with my papers is the hardest part, and this reading showed me that the best idea is to "just do it." I can edit it and make flow smoothly later on.  After moving and reading the second section of the book I found myself marking the page for future reference. I spend many hours re-writing and re-phrasing my essay and this section gave me tips on how to revise my paper in a more efficient way.  My favorite and I found will be the most helpful to me is, "Write and edit out loud." This is the third time in the past week people have told me to read out loud because it helps you to edit your paper better. So, I think it is time I try reading my paper out loud when I edit and revise it. I found this reading to be helpful and force me to think about where i want to go with my reading. Also, it has somehow had me become eager to try writing a first draft for my final paper.

Interviews

As I read the recommended pages in my FieldWorking book I found many important things about interviews. I found that the book described closed questions and open questions in depth and gave many helpful examples of what each question looks and sounds like. I related to the book when it talked about "Asking" and "Listening." I am that person who thinks that the questions are more important. But now, after reading about good interviewing skills I learned that listening is more important and will give me better information to use in my work. My favorite part of the reading was the interview on Jessie the AIDS patient, I found the interview to be helpful and interesting. I like how the interviewer Paul put in what was happing during the time he asked the question, and his thoughts in parentheses. This will be helpful when he goes back to write his paper, it will spark his memory of what was actual going on at the time. Overall I found the reading to be helpful, and I saw many things I will try on my interview at the children center.

I found this website below to be helpful in understanding open and closed ended questions, CLICK ME, and you can view this site.

Interview Bowling!

When reading the example of our third essay of our ethnography project I had many observations. The first part stuck out to me the most, I found it to be interesting because it grabbed my attention. I enjoyed that factual background information that was given about bowling, and found it very interesting because it was something I did not know. This made me curious, is that part of our assignment, or was that something that is optional in our next essay? Another thing that stood out to me was how the essay abruptly ended. It did not seem like the end of the essay, I felt as though a there should have been some small paragraph to conclude the paper. I was surprised to see how easily the essay flowed together because that was something I had trouble with in my last essay, so it stuck out to me. This gave me an idea on how to write allowing my ideas to easily flow to the next. The example essay did this by backing out of the specific detail of an interview or observation, then she describes herself and her surroundings. I honestly found this to be helpful and will most likely use this technique in my next essay. When I first stopped and though about how I am going to interview people for my essay I was nervous and thought that writing the essay will be challenging. But after reading the example essay I feel better about interviewing and writing this essay.

After reading this example essay on bowling and learning that bowling was invented in the 1400, I went on the internet to learn more. I found the link below to be a good website for learning about the history of bowling.

Group Project Progress!

My group is doing our power point on "Including Visuals in Documents." We spent the time in class today, Wednesday March 16, on coming up with four main points that each one of us will present. We almost have everything ready to start making ours slideshow on friday. At the beginning, when we first chose our topic we were not sure how much information we could come up with about adding visuals. But after our research we found ourselves with plenty of information to present. Our group really stepped to the plate today in class and found the information that we needed. I would say that all of the group members put in an equal amount of work. In the end, I have a good idea of where our project is going and I think the outcome will be a success.

Visuals do not always have to be photographs. This is a link to a bunch of examples of graphs one could use for a visual!
