For the iresearcher essay I have chosen to observe the daycare on campus. I do not know much about this specific daycare but I know information about other daycares. I know that at all daycares there are a low number of child for each staff member. I also know that every activity connects to a concept that the children are learning. For an example, the children could be coloring pictures of a bird because they are going to talk about birds and why they fly in a v-formation. Or the children could be planting a seed and at the same time leaning how a plant grows and what is needed to keep them alive. Children in daycare also spend a lot of time interacting with other kids, which is something a child who does not attend daycare might not get.
The reasons I have chosen to observe the culture of a daycare is because I want to work with children in the future and I did not go to daycare when I was younger. Now I am curious to see what a daycare is like. For example, what type of atmosphere are the children surrounded by? I want to know about the people that go there and what class they are from. Are most of the children that attended daycare an only child or do they have many siblings? Is daycare too expensive for a single parent? I know children usually get along well, but I wonder if they have a hard time because it is a new environment. I am also curious as to what the staff teaches the children. For example, are the children learning solely about holidays and day-to-day tasks? Is daycare more of an educational setting, social time or a mixture of both? I also want to know if every child receives individual attention? So that if they are behind on some skills are they encouraged and helped. Is the facility there structured or disorderly because a lot of young children can become overwhelming. And what is the most popular age of the children attending daycare, is it the older group or the younger group? I am interested in the culture of a daycare to see if I have missed a good experience or if daycare is unnecessary. In the end, i am exited to start our project and to learn about what i have always been curious about.
The place I plan on visiting looks safe and children friendly.
