15 minute observation in East Campus Commons

Feb 16, 12:00 East Campus Commons
-Only a few people are alone quite, texing, people watching
- Over all the café is empty for lunchtime
-Room= big, open, about 13 large drop down lights, large windows on the left, shades half open, doors for extra seating in the back and on the right, in the front an open concept room with food, most of the tables are empty, there is not a lot of floor space to more around.
-Pizza, French fries, subs, pasta, cereal, drinks, cut your own bread, fruits, candies, puddings, salad bar, and lasagna
-People moving in and out, on the go, more people coming in now, with pack packs (possible coming straight from class to pick up a quick lunch)
- Two people to my left, a couple flirting it up, he is getting food out of her hair, she is laughing and keeps playing with her hair, he is showing off, and so is she “look at my dog” he says and shows her his phone, she is in aww
-Three girls sitting together in a deep secret conversation, they are close and talking quietly and have a more serious face. They all look unhappy maybe the news is bad, or they are just bored and like to sit really close and talk quite, I do not know.
-People are now coming in mostly by themselves, I find this odd, don’t people stop for lunch with a few friends, or is everyone just on the runs?
- I notice that when the people come in they claim their seat first before going up to collect their food
- At this point 12:15 there has acquired a massive line at the sub counter, as if all of a sudden there was a sign free food.
-It smells like burnt bagels, maybe someone go their food stuck in the toaster but I am unsure if the smell would be that strong from one bagel.

I found it hard to figure out what to write. Before I got to ECC I thought that making this observation would be very simply. So when I sat down with my computer in front of me struggling where to star and as I started to write the information down I was unsure if I was observing the right way. But later on that day I went back to look at my notes and found that the notes sparked my memory to what happened in ECC. SO in the end I found that observing was fun but harder than I first thought.

  1. I also agree that this excercise was more difficult than expected and I found it fun. However, I got some weird looks from the kids at ECC. Did that happen to you? Also, I'm pretty sure the three girls talking secrectly you talked about were the same two girls I mentioned that were talking about a girl named Beth. Perhaps Beth was the third girl that you saw and I didn't? Maybe the two girls were talking about her when she left?

  2. Chantelle,
I think you did a good job observing everything around you and taking in all the different things happening. You didn't just talk about one thing, you described the people around you, what they were doing, wearing and acting. You talked about the smell of the food and how it was portrayed, a description of the room you were describing from the lights and windows to the shades. I think you did a good job observing because you didn;t just take in what you were seeing, you also observed people's behaviors by how they go about choosing they're tables and friends to sit with and if they were in a rush or not. Great note taking.
